Welcome Home, Little Furball! Tips for Giving Your Kitten the Best Start

Congratulations on your new kitten! Those tiny paws and that adorable face are about to bring so much joy into your life. At Skyway Animal Hospital, we're excited to help you give your new feline friend the best possible start.

The first few months of a kitten's life are crucial for their health, development, and socialization. Here's everything you need to know to set your kitten up for a lifetime of health and happiness.

Preparing Your Home

Kitten-Proofing Essentials

Before bringing your kitten home, make your space safe:

  • Secure electrical cords — Kittens love to chew
  • Remove toxic plants — Lilies, pothos, and many others are dangerous
  • Hide small objects — Rubber bands, hair ties, and small toys can cause blockages
  • Check for hiding spots — Behind appliances, in recliners, inside dryers
  • Secure windows and balconies — Kittens don't understand heights
  • Keep toilet lids down — Drowning risk for tiny kittens
  • Store chemicals and medications — In secure cabinets

Essential Supplies

  • Food and water bowls (shallow for kittens)
  • High-quality kitten food
  • Litter box with low sides (one per cat plus one)
  • Unscented, fine-grained litter
  • Scratching post
  • Carrier for vet visits
  • Comfortable bed
  • Safe toys (no strings or small parts)
  • Brush or comb

Nutrition for Growing Kittens

What to Feed

Kittens have specific nutritional needs:

  • Kitten-specific food — Higher in protein and calories than adult food
  • High-quality commercial diet — Look for AAFCO statement for "growth"
  • Wet food — Helps with hydration and is easier to eat
  • Avoid cow's milk — Most cats are lactose intolerant

Feeding Schedule

  • Up to 6 months: 3-4 small meals per day
  • 6-12 months: 2-3 meals per day
  • After 12 months: Transition to adult food and 2 meals per day

Fresh water should be available at all times.

Veterinary Care

First Vet Visit

Schedule an appointment within the first few days of bringing your kitten home. We'll:

  • Perform a thorough physical examination
  • Check for parasites
  • Start or continue the vaccination schedule
  • Discuss spay/neuter timing
  • Answer all your questions
  • Create a healthcare plan

Vaccination Schedule

Kittens need a series of vaccinations:

Core Vaccines (all cats):

  • FVRCP (feline distemper combo) — Starting at 6-8 weeks, boosted every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks
  • Rabies — At 12-16 weeks

Non-Core Vaccines (based on lifestyle):

  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) — Recommended for kittens and cats with outdoor access

Parasite Prevention

  • Deworming schedule (intestinal parasites are common in kittens)
  • Flea prevention (safe for kittens)
  • Year-round prevention is essential in Florida

Spaying and Neutering

We recommend spay/neuter surgery at approximately 4-6 months:

  • Prevents unwanted litters
  • Eliminates heat cycles and spraying behavior
  • Reduces risk of certain cancers
  • Decreases roaming and fighting

Socialization

The socialization window for kittens is approximately 2-7 weeks, but continues through about 14 weeks. Early positive experiences shape a confident adult cat.

Gentle Exposure To:

  • Different people (various ages, appearances)
  • Being handled (paws, ears, mouth)
  • Household sounds (vacuum, doorbell, TV)
  • Car rides
  • The carrier
  • Grooming tools
  • Other pets (when safe and supervised)

Tips for Success

  • Keep experiences positive (treats and praise)
  • Never force interactions
  • Watch for signs of fear (flatten ears, wide eyes, hissing)
  • Give your kitten a safe place to retreat
  • Be patient—every kitten is different

Litter Box Training

Most kittens instinctively use a litter box, but you can help:

  • Use a box with low sides for easy entry
  • Place in a quiet, accessible location
  • Keep away from food and water
  • Scoop daily, full change weekly
  • One box per cat plus one extra
  • Avoid scented litters (cats often dislike them)

If accidents occur:

  • Clean thoroughly with enzymatic cleaners
  • Check for medical issues (diarrhea, painful urination)
  • Evaluate box cleanliness and location

Play and Enrichment

Play is essential for kitten development:

Safe Toys

  • Feather wands (with supervision)
  • Balls and mice
  • Puzzle feeders
  • Paper bags and boxes
  • Cat tunnels

Play Tips

  • Schedule regular play sessions
  • Rotate toys to maintain interest
  • Never use hands as toys (teaches biting)
  • Provide vertical space (cat trees, shelves)
  • Interactive toys engage hunting instincts

Common Health Concerns

Watch for these signs that warrant a vet visit:

  • Not eating for more than 12-24 hours
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Sneezing, discharge from eyes or nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Straining in the litter box
  • Crying or signs of pain

Kittens can decline quickly, so don't wait when something seems wrong.

Building the Bond

The relationship you build now lasts a lifetime:

  • Spend quality time together daily
  • Learn your kitten's communication (body language, vocalizations)
  • Establish gentle handling routines
  • Be consistent with rules and expectations
  • Create positive associations with being touched, held, and groomed
