2

Vaccine Series

Starting at 6-8 weeks, we schedule vaccine boosters every 3-4 weeks until around 16 weeks. Each visit includes a quick exam and growth check.

3

Parasite Protection

We test for intestinal parasites, provide deworming, and start monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention—critical in Florida's climate.

Growth Milestones

We monitor weight, development, and behavior at each visit. We'll discuss nutrition, training, and socialization appropriate for their age.

5

Spay/Neuter Planning

Puppy & Kitten Care FAQ

Everything you need to know about puppy & kitten care at Skyway Animal Hospital.

Ideally within the first week of bringing them home, or at 6-8 weeks of age. Early visits establish a vaccination schedule, check for congenital issues, and give you expert guidance on care.

Typically 3-4 visits spaced 3-4 weeks apart, starting at 6-8 weeks and finishing around 16 weeks. After that, a booster at one year and then annual or triennial vaccines depending on the type.

We recommend AAFCO-approved puppy or kitten food (not adult formulas). We'll provide specific brand recommendations based on your pet's breed and size during your visit.

We recommend waiting until 1-2 weeks after their final puppy vaccine (around 17-18 weeks) before visiting high-dog-traffic areas. Socialization in controlled settings with known, vaccinated dogs can start earlier.

In Florida, we recommend starting heartworm and flea/tick prevention as early as 8 weeks of age and continuing year-round. Our warm, humid climate means parasites are active all 12 months—consistent prevention is critical.

For cats, we typically recommend 4-6 months. For dogs, the ideal age varies by size and breed—generally 6-12 months, though larger breeds may benefit from waiting. We'll advise on optimal timing during your visits.

Before vaccines are complete, socialize in controlled environments—invite vaccinated dogs over, carry your puppy to new places, and expose them to different sounds and surfaces. Avoid dog parks and pet stores until 1-2 weeks after the final vaccine series.

Occasional diarrhea during diet transitions, teething (chewing everything), and high energy are normal. Contact us if you see persistent vomiting, diarrhea lasting more than a day, lethargy, loss of appetite, or any discharge from the eyes or nose.

Yes! Secure electrical cords, remove toxic plants (lilies are deadly for cats), store chemicals and medications out of reach, pick up small objects that could be swallowed, and block access to areas with hazards. We provide a checklist at your first visit.

Plan for visits every 3-4 weeks from 6-16 weeks for vaccines, then a 6-month check-up, and a 1-year visit. After the first year, annual wellness exams are standard. More frequent visits may be needed if health issues arise.

Watch for lethargy, refusing food for more than a day, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, difficulty breathing, pale gums, straining to urinate, or a swollen belly. Young pets can deteriorate quickly, so don't wait—call us if something seems off.

We strongly recommend pet insurance, especially when your pet is young and healthy—there are no pre-existing condition exclusions. Accidents and illnesses can happen at any age, and insurance gives you peace of mind to pursue the best treatment options.
