What to Expect

We believe in transparency. Here's your step-by-step guide to your pet's visit.

1

Quality-of-Life Discussion

We help you evaluate your pet's comfort, mobility, appetite, and joy to determine if it's time—or if we can improve their quality of life with adjustments.

2

Comfort Planning

If you decide to proceed, we schedule a time that works for your family. We explain every step so there are no surprises.

3

Peaceful Environment

Your family is welcomed into a private, comfortable room. You can hold your pet, talk to them, and take as much time as you need.

4

Gentle Process

A sedative is given first so your pet falls into a deep, comfortable sleep. Then a painless injection allows them to pass peacefully while you're by their side.

5

Aftercare

We handle cremation arrangements and provide keepsakes like paw prints. Our team follows up to check on your family in the days after.

End-of-Life & Compassionate Care FAQ

Everything you need to know about end-of-life & compassionate care at Skyway Animal Hospital.

This is the most difficult question pet owners face. We use a quality-of-life scale that evaluates pain, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, and whether your pet has more good days than bad. We're here to guide you through this decision—you don't have to make it alone.

No. We first administer a sedative so your pet falls into a deep, peaceful sleep—they become completely unaware. The final injection is given after full sedation and causes the heart to stop painlessly within seconds. Your pet feels nothing but comfort.

Absolutely. Most families choose to stay, and we encourage it. Your presence is comforting to your pet. You can hold them, pet them, and talk to them throughout the process. If you prefer not to stay, that's okay too—we'll make sure they feel safe and loved.

You can spend as much time with your pet as you need. When you're ready, we coordinate cremation—either private (ashes returned to you) or communal. We can also provide paw print impressions and fur clippings as keepsakes.

Euthanasia fees include the sedation, the procedure, and time in our private comfort room. Private cremation with urn return is an additional cost. We provide a complete cost breakdown in advance so there are no surprises during this difficult time.

Private cremation means your pet is cremated individually and the ashes are returned to you in an urn. Communal cremation means your pet is cremated with other pets and ashes are not returned. Both are handled with care and respect.

Yes. Many families prefer to schedule a specific time so they can prepare and say goodbye on their terms. We offer appointments at the beginning or end of the day for added privacy and peace.

Pet hospice focuses on keeping your pet comfortable in their final days or weeks through pain management, appetite stimulants, mobility aids, and environmental modifications. It's not about prolonging life—it's about maximizing comfort and quality in the time remaining.

Be honest and age-appropriate. Avoid euphemisms like "put to sleep" which can confuse young children. Acknowledge their grief and share your own. We can provide children's grief resources and book recommendations to help your family process the loss together.

Yes, pets do grieve. Dogs and cats may search for their companion, eat less, sleep more, or seem withdrawn. Maintain their routine, give extra attention, and allow them to see and sniff their companion after passing if they were closely bonded. Most pets adjust within a few weeks.

We currently offer euthanasia at our clinic in a private, comfortable room designed to feel as home-like as possible. We can recommend trusted mobile veterinarians who provide at-home euthanasia services if that is your preference.

Pet grief is real and valid. Allow yourself to mourn. Many people find comfort in creating a memorial, writing about their pet, or speaking with others who understand. We provide pet loss grief resources and support group information with our aftercare materials.
