Pet Vaccinations FAQ

Everything you need to know about pet vaccinations at Skyway Animal Hospital.

Core vaccines for dogs include Rabies (required by law) and DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus). These protect against the most common and serious canine diseases.

Core vaccines for cats include Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia). Outdoor or multi-cat household cats may also need the Feline Leukemia (FeLV) vaccine.

Puppies should start their vaccine series at 6-8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3-4 weeks until they're about 16 weeks old. This builds strong immunity as maternal antibodies fade.

Yes, vaccines are very safe and are the single most effective way to prevent serious diseases. Mild side effects like slight lethargy or soreness at the injection site are normal and resolve within 24-48 hours.

Most core vaccines require boosters every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine type. Rabies is typically every 3 years after the initial series, while lifestyle vaccines like Bordetella may need annual boosters. We track your pet's schedule and send reminders.

Lifestyle vaccines protect against diseases your pet may be exposed to based on their activities. Bordetella (kennel cough) is recommended for dogs that board, visit groomers, or go to dog parks. Leptospirosis is recommended for dogs exposed to wildlife or standing water. We assess your pet's risk factors.

Serious allergic reactions are very rare. Mild reactions (brief lethargy, slight swelling at the injection site) are more common and resolve on their own. We monitor your pet after vaccination, and if your pet has had a previous reaction, we can pre-treat with antihistamines.

Yes. Rabies vaccination is required by law regardless of lifestyle. Even indoor cats can be exposed to diseases through open windows, escaped encounters, or new pets brought into the home. We can adjust the vaccine schedule to focus only on what's necessary for indoor cats.

A titer test measures your pet's existing antibody levels to determine if they still have immunity from previous vaccines. It can help avoid unnecessary re-vaccination, but it cannot replace legally required vaccines like Rabies. We offer titers when appropriate.

Modified live vaccines use a weakened form of the virus to stimulate a strong immune response, while killed vaccines use an inactivated virus and may require more doses or adjuvants. Both are safe and effective—we choose the best option for each patient.

Vaccination costs vary by type and number needed. Core vaccine packages are very affordable, and we provide a cost estimate before administering any vaccines. We accept CareCredit and offer wellness packages that include vaccinations at a bundled rate.
